Unemployment fell for the seventh consecutive month in September 2010. However, the decline is slower than on average in previous months. This is according to figures published today by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
There were 412,000 people without work at home in September, seasonally adjusted, just over 5 per cent of the labour force. Early this year, Dutch unemployment peaked at over 6 per cent, before steadily declining.
The pace of decline did slow down in September. Compared to August, the number of unemployed dropped by two thousand. On average, unemployment fell by an average of six thousand persons per month over the past six months.
Among young people, the number of jobseekers rose, as in the previous two months. In September, their number rose by 1.5 per cent to 42 thousand young jobseekers.
Fewer men are unemployed now than a year ago. The number of unemployed women, however, is a lot higher than a year ago.
On the number of outplacement processes, the above development has not yet had any effect. Outplacement, according to recent research, has a positive effect for those who have a outplacement program have followed. What impact this has on overall unemployment is unfortunately impossible to measure.
Most people who become unemployed are often laid off as a result of redundancy. Fortunately, outplacement is often used.
